Latin American Catholicism represents one of Christianity’s most striking examples of cultural adaptation. In the Spanish colonies, devotion to the Virgin Mary found fertile ground, merging indigenous musical traditions with European artistic ideals. This created a rich sacred musical culture that attracted composers from across the Atlantic. Among them was Italian musician Ignacio de Jerusalem, who established himself at Mexico City Cathedral. Alongside him, local composer Manuel de Sumaya and Spanish composers whose works circulated widely in the region contributed to a vibrant fusion of styles. Their music, particularly suited to Christmas celebrations, reflects a unique blend of Old World influences and New World creativity.

Michael Alexander Willens (b. 1952) is an American conductor and music director of Die Kölner Akademie. A graduate of the Juilliard School, where he studied with John Nelson, he also trained with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and with Paul Vorwerk in choral conducting. His musical background spans baroque to contemporary, jazz, and pop styles. Willens has led performances across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East, earning widespread acclaim. Passionate about rediscovering forgotten repertoire and championing contemporary American composers, he has conducted numerous world premières and released over 40 acclaimed recordings, many recognized with awards and international praise.
