Baroque Anatomy #5 – The Eye is the opening chapter of a new project by Accademia Bizantina and Ottavio Dantone, offering a fresh, immersive look at Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. The series reinterprets each concerto by placing it within its original musical environment, pairing Bach’s works with earlier pieces that share stylistic, structural or instrumental traits. This approach highlights both the sources from which Bach drew and the innovative ways he expanded beyond them. The result is an unexpected and evocative exploration that illuminates how each Brandenburg Concerto emerges from historical models while ultimately surpassing them.

Accademia Bizantina, founded in Ravenna in 1984, is dedicated to performing Baroque music according to its original stylistic rules, using period instruments. This approach deepened in 1996 with the arrival of conductor Ottavio Dantone, whose expertise in Baroque expression shaped the ensemble’s distinctive, historically informed performance style. With concertmaster Alessandro Tampieri joining in 2011, the orchestra has become known for its balance of rigour, technique and interpretative insight. Based in Bagnacavallo since 2013, Accademia Bizantina has recorded for major labels and earned major awards. It performs worldwide and, since 2024, has served as orchestra-in-residence at the Innsbruck Early Music Festival.
