Following France’s 1870 defeat by Prussia, Paris reasserted itself as a global cultural hub, attracting artists and tourists alike. Meanwhile, many French citizens became fascinated with Spain—some traveling there, others encountering Spanish culture at home through the influx of some 500,000 Spanish migrants. This exchange profoundly influenced French art and music. The RLPO and Domingo Hindoyan capture this spirit in a program beginning with Chabrier’s España, inspired by his travels and Manet’s Spanish-themed art. The album continues with Debussy’s Ibéria, praised by de Falla for its authenticity, and culminates in Ravel’s Spanish-infused masterpieces, including the exhilarating Bolero.
Born in 1980 in Caracas, Venezuela, Domingo Hindoyan began as a violinist in El Sistema and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra before studying conducting in Geneva and assisting Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. Now Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and former Principal Guest Conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony, he has released five acclaimed albums with the RLPO, including Verismo and Venezuela! Music from the Americas! (2024). Hindoyan maintains an active international career, conducting major orchestras and operas worldwide, with upcoming engagements at the Wiener Staatsoper, Los Angeles Opera, Paris Opera, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
