Leó Weiner was a prominent Hungarian composer and pedagogue, celebrated for both his teaching and compositions. His Serenade, composed at age 21, gained immediate acclaim for its light, intimate, and melodic character, influenced by stylized Hungarian dances. Works such as Divertimento No. 3 and Variations on a Hungarian Folksong draw on joyful folk material from Budapest’s Museum of Ethnography. His Violin Concerto No. 1, an orchestration of his Violin Sonata, Op. 9, balances playful and dramatic elements. This recording is notable for restoring 115 bars cut from the concerto’s fourth movement, marking the first complete recording of the work.

Valéria Csányi (b. 1958) is a Hungarian conductor who studied at the Liszt Academy of Music, earning diplomas in music teaching, choral conducting, and orchestral conducting. She attended masterclasses with Karl Österreicher, Péter Eötvös, and Milan Horvat. Since 1983, she has been affiliated with the Hungarian State Opera, beginning as a répétiteur and making her conducting debut in 1988, leading operas and premieres. Between 1995 and 2009, she participated in all State Opera ballet productions and has conducted over 700 performances, touring internationally in Europe and Mexico. Csányi has recorded extensively for Naxos, including Strauss’s Fürstin Ninetta, Erkel’s István király, Széchényi’s Complete Dances, and Weiner’s ballets and orchestral works.
