Music for These Troubled Times examines themes of melancholy, reflection, and resilience through the keyboard music of English virginalist composers from the late 16th and 17th centuries, connecting their emotional world to modern experiences of political instability, war, and uncertainty. Inspired by The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), which presents music as a remedy for emotional distress, the program combines contemplative pavanes, inventive variations, and intricate polyphonic works with contemporary composer Maxim Shalygin’s KHORA. The recording also features rarely heard repertoire, including the premiere recording of the anonymous A Ground. Performed on three historically significant harpsichords modeled after instruments by Lodewijk Theewes, Ioannes Ruckers, and Henri Hemsch, the album emphasizes both historical authenticity and emotional immediacy.
Dmytro Kokoshynskyy is a Ukrainian harpsichordist recognized for his achievements in major international competitions, including second prize and the Public Award at the 2023 MA Competition in Bruges, third prize at the 2022 Leipzig International Bach Competition, and second prize at the 2021 Milan International Harpsichord Competition. Born into a musical family in Kyiv, he began his studies with his mother, Viktoriia Kokoshynska, before pursuing piano, violin, and eventually harpsichord studies in Kyiv. Since 2017, he has studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under Francesco Corti. Kokoshynskyy performs widely across Europe, specializing in Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and contemporary repertoire, and has appeared at prominent festivals while collaborating with renowned early music artists and educators.
