Dmitri Shostakovich’s chamber music offers an intimate window into his complex emotional landscape, navigating personal expression within a restrictive Soviet regime. This recording pairs his two distinct piano trios with the 7 Romances on Poems by Alexander Blok. The single-movement Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8 (1923), written at age sixteen, reveals a youthful, late-Romantic lyricism. In contrast, the monumental Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 (1944), confronts wartime grief and tragedy, concluding with an ironic, Jewish-themed dance of death. The program is completed by the 7 Romances, a haunting vocal cycle where soprano and instruments engage in stark, poetic dialogues suspended over silence.
Founded in 2012, Trio Kanon, comprising Lena Yokoyama, Alessandro Copia, and Diego Maccagnola, developed their chamber music expertise under the guidance of the Trio di Parma at the International Chamber Music Academy in Duino. The Italian ensemble, whose name represents "flourishing music," has earned widespread international credibility by winning the Chamber Music Award in Vienna and securing first prize at the 2018 Pinerolo & Torino Competition. Having refined their artistry through masterclasses with legendary figures like Alfred Brendel, Trio Kanon maintains an active global presence, performing to critical acclaim across Europe, China, the United States, and Japan.
Born in Siberia in 1981, soprano Irina Dubrovskaya trained at the Mikhail Glinka State Conservatory and the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre. She established her operatic career in Russia as a soloist at Moscow's Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre, specializing in lyric coloratura roles such as Gilda (Rigoletto) and Violetta (La Traviata). Since making her Italian debut at the 2008 Ravenna Festival, Dubrovskaya has developed an active international presence, performing across Europe, Latin America, and Japan. Equally accomplished on the concert stage, her repertoire spans orchestral masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler alongside extensive chamber music recitals.
