While Christian Sinding is known almost exclusively today for his piano piece Frühlingsrauschen (“Rustle of Spring”), he was one of the few Norwegian composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries whose work also gained attention beyond his homeland. Aside from Edvard Grieg, only Sinding, Ole Bull, and Johan Svendsen managed to establish themselves in Central Europe during their lifetimes. Although he was highly regarded throughout his life, with his music played in nearly every distinguished home (partly due to the extensive publication of his works by Breitkopf & Härtel), Sinding is now largely forgotten and, in some cases, underrated. This shift in his reputation stems more from the nature of his musical aesthetics than from any lack of talent. His legacy was also severely tarnished when, in 1941 – shortly before his death and while suffering from dementia – he joined the Norwegian Nazi Party, the Nasjonal Samling.
Since its founding in 1999, the Hyperion Trio has earned an outstanding international reputation. It has performed over 250 works in its concert programs and self-curated concert cycles, including several world premieres
