Anton Bruckner's Ninth Symphony, his last and unfinished work, is a monumental testimony to the composer's spiritual and musical vision. It combines tremendous orchestral power with deep introspection and culminates in a deeply moving Adagio. Allegedly dedicated ‘to the majesty of all majesties, the dear God’, the symphony reflects Bruckner's deep faith and is characterised by rich harmonies and extraordinary emotional depth.
Founded in 1912, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra is one of Sweden's most renowned orchestras, known not only for its interpretations of Nordic composers such as Sibelius and Stenhammar, but also for its Bruckner recordings. The orchestra frequently tours internationally and regularly performs in its home venue, the Louis de Geer Concert Hall, where this recording was made. The orchestra is conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens, who has earned an excellent reputation both as an opera conductor and as a specialist for the late romantic and modern repertoire of the 20th century.
