The recorder was one of the instruments Georg Philipp Telemann played himself. In my opinion, he is the baroque composer who wrote the most idiomatically for the instrument. That pleasure is enhanced by the fact that his work always takes me back to my youth. Aside from the recorder, I also used to play the oboe and my younger brother played both the recorder and the bassoon. I well remember the many hours of happy music making and working towards performances at the music school. It is that uncomplicated joy of playing together which is characteristic of Telemann’s works and which I and my friends have tried to capture in this recording. The recording sessions took place in my beloved Kruiskerk in Burgum, where I have been playing since I was ten; a ‘sentimental journey’ you might say. In an effort to become a child again, as it were, and to relive the uninhibitedness of youth, I once again hope to communicate to the listener how amazing this ancient music is. This recording includes all kinds of chamber music, from more intimate trio sonatas with various wind instruments to two grandly conceived concertos for seven instruments. — Erik Bosgraaf
