Little is known about Vicente Lusitano (c. 1520–c. 1561), but what we do know makes him one of the most interesting musical personalities of the Renaissance: Born as the son of a Portuguese man and an African woman, he is one of the first Black composers whose works were printed. He became known as a composer and music theorist, and his Liber primus epigramatum, containing 23 motets, was printed in 1551. In 1561, his trace disappears in Germany after he converted to Protestantism. The ensemble Arte Minima presents here the first part of its complete recording.
