Antonio Salieri was influential as an opera composer and later in life as a teacher to the likes of Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt – quite unlike the sinister and entirely fictional portrayal he received in the film Amadeus. Both of his keyboard concertos were composed during his early years in Vienna and reflect influences from Haydn and the galant style of Johann Christian Bach. The Harpsichord Concerto in B flat major is broader and more elaborate but lighter in mood when compared with the stormy first movement of the Harpsichord Concerto in C major. Heard here in its world première recording, the Keyboard Sonata in C major presents as a suite of short independent pieces, while the short March in D major has only recently been discovered in a Berlin archive.
Antonio Salieri (1750–1825) was a renowned Italian composer whose operas gained widespread acclaim across Europe in the late 18th century. Brought to Vienna at age 16 by court composer F.L. Gassmann, Salieri quickly rose in prominence, becoming court composer in 1774 and Hofkapellmeister in 1788—a role he held for 36 years. He composed operas for Austria, France, and Italy, with his most famous work being Tarare (1787), later adapted as Axur, re d’Ormus. Salieri collaborated with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte and was more popular in Vienna than Mozart at times. After 1804, he focused on sacred music and teaching, mentoring Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt.
Filippo Pantieri is an acclaimed Italian pianist and harpsichordist, trained under leading teachers and a graduate of the Imola Piano Academy. After winning top prizes in national and international competitions, including the Davorin Jenko competition in Belgrade, he has performed with major orchestras and Baroque ensembles. A specialist in early music, he collaborates regularly with Ensemble Sezione Aurea and has recorded for labels such as Passacaille, Brilliant, and Arcana, earning top critical acclaim. He also holds a degree in Behavioral Sciences and teaches harpsichord and continuo at the “B. Maderna” Conservatory in Cesena, where he has worked since 2011.
