This album by Onyx Brass features a mix of works for brass quintet and larger brass ensembles, including Florence Price’s Octet for Brasses and Piano. Most pieces are receiving their first commercial recording, notably two rediscovered works by Benjamin Britten from the Britten Pears Archive. These premieres are complemented by classic brass chamber pieces by Sir Malcolm Arnold and Joseph Horovitz, long-time favourites of the repertoire. Spanning composers from across the 20th century and both sides of the Atlantic, the album offers a vibrant and varied exploration of brass music traditions and styles.
Onyx Brass, founded in 1993, is a leading British brass chamber ensemble praised for its excellence and versatility. Its members hold principal roles in top UK orchestras, and the group performs internationally and on BBC Radio. Renowned for championing new music, Onyx has premiered works by major composers like Jonathan Dove and John Tavener. They regularly collaborate with choirs and support emerging talent through the John Armitage Memorial Trust. Committed to education, they conduct workshops at top institutions including Juilliard and the Guildhall School. The ensemble is also in residence at Westminster Abbey Choir School and Imperial College London.
