Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in Salzburg in 1756, was a prodigious musical talent from early childhood, guided by his father Leopold, a respected composer and teacher. By age six, Mozart was a skilled composer and keyboard performer, touring Europe's courts with his sister. Widely acclaimed, he absorbed diverse musical influences and impressed figures like Johann Christian Bach. From age 10 to 17, he composed prolifically, including early operas and instrumental works, though he struggled to secure lasting patronage.
His travels to Italy brought success, honors, and operatic commissions. Despite producing works like Mitridate and Lucio Silla, he remained unappointed to a steady position. A stint in Paris (1778–1779) proved disappointing, marred by his mother’s death and artistic frustrations. Returning to Salzburg, he continued composing, especially for wind instruments.
Mozart’s final decade in Vienna marked a period of extraordinary creative output. He composed major symphonies (Nos. 39–41), groundbreaking string quartets, and his most celebrated operas: The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte. His final opera, The Magic Flute (1791), fused German theatrical traditions with operatic innovation. While working on his unfinished Requiem, Mozart died at age 35 in Vienna, leaving behind a legacy as one of classical music’s greatest figures.
