Blending historical research with expressive modern pianism, Hicks draws on Chopin’s authentic first editions—often overlooked—and integrates historically informed techniques, including tempo rubato, pedaling, and subtle improvisation. The result is a performance that feels both intimate and true to Chopin’s creative spirit. Recorded at night with minimal editing and long takes, the album evokes the salon atmosphere in which these works were originally performed. Dr. Kim Sauberlich’s liner notes further illuminate the interpretive and historical context behind the recording.

Tom Hicks, a pianist from Guernsey, is celebrated for his refined artistry and technical command. Trained initially by Mervyn Grand, he later studied in the UK with Murray McLachlan and in the U.S. with Boris Berman and James Giles, earning a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Northwestern University. A Yamaha Artist and frequent soloist, Hicks has performed widely across Europe and the U.S., with over 60 concerto appearances, including full Rachmaninoff and Brahms cycles. His acclaimed discography spans works by Ireland, Liszt, and contemporary composers like Camden Reeves. Also a dedicated educator, he currently teaches at the College of Charleston.
