This program is dedicated to the fandango, the national dance of 18th-century Spain—a spirited, improvisational blend of music and movement embraced by all social classes. Danced everywhere from theaters to palaces, and typically accompanied by guitar and castanets, the fandango symbolized joy and vitality. Yet, as critics of the time noted, it also carried a sensual charge, with its passionate, flirtatious movements. Giacomo Casanova famously called it “the most seductive and voluptuous dance in the world.” With roots influenced by both Oriental and South American traditions, this performance by Concierto Iberico and dancer Daniela Niemietz revives the fandango’s expressive, improvisational spirit.

Ensemble Concierto Iberico is dedicated to fostering intercultural dialogue through music, highlighting historical and contemporary connections between Spain and Europe, as well as the Iberian Peninsula’s ties to Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Their performances blend past and present in a vibrant cultural exchange. The ensemble enjoys appearing in both historic and unconventional venues, including Bremen Cathedral, Hamburg’s St. Petri Church, and the Leipzig Kulturnhalle, and at festivals like Kasteelconcerten-NL and the Arp Schnitger Days. They also present immersive walking concerts in Bremen through their KonzertStattReise series, combining music with guided tours to create unique, educational cultural experiences.
