Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the San Francisco Symphony in Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements, a powerful work born from the turmoil of World War II. Tense and vividly rhythmic, the symphony channels the chaos and energy of the era, inspired by wartime newsreels and Stravinsky’s unused film sketches. The result is music that feels cinematic—bold, physical, and sharply focused—merging the intensity of the concert hall with the drama of the silver screen.
Esa-Pekka Salonen (born 1958 in Helsinki) is a Finnish conductor and composer celebrated for his innovation and artistic range. Trained in horn, composition, and conducting at the Sibelius Academy under Jorma Panula, he has led many of the world’s foremost orchestras. Salonen currently serves as Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony and will become Creative Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2026–27 and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Paris in 2027–28. A prolific recording artist, he has earned major awards, including a GRAMMY for Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater. His acclaimed concertos for piano, violin, and cello highlight his dual mastery as composer and conductor.
