Anton Bruckner (1824–1896) was an Austrian composer and organist renowned for his symphonies and sacred music, including Masses, the Te Deum, and motets. His symphonies, notable for their expansive scale, rich harmonies, and polyphonic complexity, represent the culmination of Austro-German Romanticism and contributed to musical radicalism through bold dissonance and modulation. Personally modest and deeply respectful of figures such as Wagner, Bruckner was highly self-critical and frequently revised his works, resulting in multiple versions. Though his music attracted criticism during his lifetime, particularly for its length and repetition, it profoundly influenced later composers, most notably Gustav Mahler.
Eugen Jochum (1902–1987) was a renowned German conductor known for his deep spirituality, moral integrity, and mastery of the Austro-German repertoire, especially the works of Bruckner, Brahms, and Beethoven. He began his career in German opera houses and rose to prominence as chief conductor in Hamburg during the Nazi era, where he maintained artistic independence. He founded the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1949 and shared leadership of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 1960s. Admired for his instinctive, collaborative approach to conducting, Jochum left an extensive and acclaimed recording legacy and remained active until shortly before his death.
