Eugene Ormandy (1899–1985) was a Hungarian-born American conductor closely associated with Late Romantic and early 20th-century music. A violin prodigy, he graduated from the Budapest Royal Academy at 14 and taught by 17 before touring Central Europe. Moving to New York, he played violin for silent films until a 1924 substitute appearance led him to pursue conducting. He conducted for radio, summer concerts, and briefly deputized for Arturo Toscanini with the Philadelphia Orchestra. After leading the Minneapolis Symphony from 1931 to 1936, he returned to Philadelphia, becoming principal conductor in 1938 and remaining until 1980, cultivating the orchestra’s famed rich string sound.
