During the 15th century, the Aragonese dynasty repositioned Naples as a central hub of Mediterranean culture, transforming it into a leading musical center of Renaissance Europe. Under Alfonso the Magnanimous, Naples became a meeting point for Franco-Burgundian polyphony, Italian lyricism, and Iberian vocal traditions. Music permeated all levels of social life, serving ceremonial, religious, and festive functions while symbolizing cultural identity and prestige. This rich and varied sound world reflected a dynamic and multilayered society. The Emyolia Ensemble’s interpretation, using three lutes and a dulcimer, creates a unified texture while emphasizing the cantus through subtle percussive color.
The Emyolia Ensemble, founded in June 2019, is dedicated to Renaissance music interpreted through intimate and refined sonorities characteristic of historical courtly settings. Performing polyphonic and contrapuntal repertoire with three lutes and a psaltery, the ensemble achieves a homogeneous texture while highlighting the cantus through subtle percussive color. Originating as a project within the ResonArs Academy of Ancient Arts, Emyolia brings together young musicians from diverse backgrounds united by a shared artistic vision. Their work seeks to rediscover Renaissance music in a way that emphasizes its enduring expressive power and its continued ability to captivate modern audiences.
