Sergei Prokofiev’s nine piano sonatas, written between 1909 and 1951, form a monumental cycle that reflects the composer’s artistic development amid profound historical upheaval. Celebrated for their exceptional technical demands, structural originality, and psychological intensity, these works occupy a central place in the 20th-century piano repertoire. The so-called “War Sonatas” (Nos. 6, 7, and 8), composed during World War II, stand out for their dramatic force and expressive power, and are widely regarded as among Prokofiev’s most important and enduring compositions.

Italian pianist Carlo Grante (born 1960) received his training in Rome, the United States, and London, studying with distinguished figures such as Sergio Perticaroli, Ivan Davis, Rudolf Firkušný, and Alice Kezeradze-Pogorelich. Renowned for his vast repertoire and intellectual depth, he is especially noted for championing both major works and lesser-known composers, including Leopold Godowsky and Ferruccio Busoni. Grante has performed worldwide in leading concert halls and with major orchestras, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musical insight. His extensive discography exceeds thirty recordings and includes major ongoing integral projects.
