Before the advent of cinema and modern media, melodrama—spoken narration accompanied by music—was a powerful storytelling form embraced by major composers such as Franz Liszt and Richard Strauss. Strauss’s Enoch Arden, inspired by Alfred Tennyson’s poem, is a dramatic and deeply romantic sea narrative recounting the fate of a sailor who returns from shipwreck to find his life transformed. This new GENUIN release features baritone Paul Pattloch and pianist Brandt Fredriksen in a compelling performance that captures the work’s emotional breadth, from storm-tossed seas to longing, loss, and enduring love, offering an intimate and evocative interpretation of Strauss’s masterpiece.
Paul Pattloch is a German actor and vocal artist trained at the Stage School of Music, Dance and Drama in Hamburg, where he specialized in acting. He made his professional debut in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and subsequently spent three years with the Schleswig-Holstein State Theatre and Symphony Orchestra, performing major roles in works by Shakespeare, Brecht/Weill, and Hebbel. Pattloch later pursued vocal studies in the United States with Betty Allen and James King. His career includes touring productions of Fiddler on the Roof and The Phantom of the Opera, as well as work in tour management. He now works in the United States as a voice coach, voice artist, actor, and personal coach.
Pianist Brandt Fredriksen maintains an active international career as a soloist and accompanist, performing at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Munich’s Gasteig, the Megaron in Athens, and concert halls in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has appeared in recital at Weill Recital Hall and is an accomplished chamber musician, collaborating with members of leading ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. His performances have been widely broadcast internationally. Fredriksen also serves as pianist and musical director of That’s Not Tango: Astor Piazzolla – A Life in Music. He holds advanced degrees from Juilliard and Stony Brook University and is a recipient of Juilliard’s Munz Award.
