In the fifth volume of the complete organ works of Johann Pachelbel, Matthew Owens continues his insightful survey of the composer’s oeuvre, recorded on the historic Metzler organ at Trinity College, Cambridge. The programme highlights Pachelbel’s fusion of northern virtuosity and southern lyricism, from dazzling toccatas and intricate fugues to intimate chorale preludes and Magnificat Fugues. Owens’s interpretations combine clarity, expressive warmth, and scholarly sensitivity, presenting music that balances liturgical function with concert artistry, and reaffirming Pachelbel’s status as a central voice in seventeenth-century organ literature.

Matthew Owens has been Director of Music at Belfast Cathedral since 2019, leading its professional adult choir and overseeing all aspects of cathedral music, while also founding the Ulster Consort. Previously, he served at Wells Cathedral and St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, earning international recognition for the Wells Cathedral Choir. Educated at Chetham’s School of Music, The Queen’s College, Oxford, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Amsterdam Conservatorium, Owens has performed and recorded extensively, championed new music with over 200 world premieres, guest conducted leading ensembles, and published compositions with major music publishers.
