Liberata explores the vibrant artistic world of seventeenth-century Rome through the remarkable figure of Queen Christina of Sweden, the former monarch who abdicated her throne and became one of the era’s most influential patrons of the arts. Celebrated for her intellectual independence and refined taste, Christina transformed her Roman palace into a center of musical innovation, fostering new creative forms and spectacular performances. By reconstructing the music associated with the Queen’s funeral rites, Liberata offers a compelling journey into the grandeur of Baroque Rome, revealing a culture distinguished by its artistic richness, dramatic expression, and spirit of experimentation.

Founded in 2012 at the initiative of cellist Antoine Touche, L'Escadron Volant de la Reine is a distinguished early music ensemble composed of graduates from leading European conservatories in Paris, Lyon, The Hague, and Brussels. Named after the ladies-in-waiting of Catherine de Medici, the ensemble embodies a collaborative spirit that combines artistic rigor with creativity, operating without a designated leader and emphasizing collective musical reflection. Dedicated to rediscovering lesser-known seventeenth- and eighteenth-century repertoire, particularly from Italy, the ensemble has earned widespread critical acclaim for its recordings and performances. Based in France’s Centre-Val de Loire region, it performs internationally and actively promotes early music through innovative initiatives such as the Les SuPercheries festival.
