Arkaïtz Chambonnet's new album “Cordes basques” represents a particularly personal artistic statement, focusing on music inspired by the Basque tradition. Rather than emphasizing virtuosic display or overtly picturesque Spanish stylistic traits, Chambonnet adopts a restrained and poetic approach characterized by subtlety, breath, and expressive nuance. This interpretive choice elevates traditional folk dances into more introspective musical narratives, transforming familiar material into refined poetic evocations. The result is a carefully curated program that avoids folkloric clichés while offering an elegant and sophisticated reimagining of Basque musical heritage.
Arkaitz Chambonnet (born 1987) is a French classical guitarist trained at the Paris Conservatory under Olivier Chassain, following earlier studies with Emmanuel de Hulster and Gérard Abiton. An award-winning performer, he has earned major distinctions in international competitions, including the Fernando Sor Competition and the Francisco Tárrega Competition, as well as recognition at the Printemps de la Guitare in Belgium. Active as both soloist and chamber musician, he has performed with ensembles such as the Orquestra de Castelló and the Orquestra de la Marina Alta, and is a soloist with the Paul Kuentz Orchestra. Chambonnet is also a founding member of the acclaimed guitar quartet Quatuor Éclisses and the Duo Almadera. His acclaimed debut album Essences Baroques showcases his refined transcriptions of Baroque works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti.
