This programme celebrates the rich expressive possibilities of the trombone through a diverse selection of twentieth-century works centered on Paul Hindemith, one of Germany’s most influential modern composers. His Sonata for Trombone and Piano, a virtuosic and energetic masterpiece, is complemented by the contemplative Ruhig movement from an unfinished sonata composed before his emigration. The programme also highlights Hindemith’s finely crafted songs, whose elegance recalls the French mélodie tradition. Alongside works by Francis Poulenc, Charles Koechlin, Maurice Ravel, and Claude Debussy, specially arranged for trombone and piano, these pieces showcase the artistry, versatility, and refined musicianship of trombonist Guilhem Kusnierek.

Guilhem Kusnierek is an internationally acclaimed trombonist and prizewinner of numerous prestigious competitions, including those in Lieksa, Porcia, and Jeju, as well as Third Prize at the 2015 ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Renowned for both his solo and orchestral career, he has performed with leading ensembles across Europe and Asia, appearing as a soloist with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the German Radio Philharmonic. Trained by distinguished teachers including Michel Becquet and Jörgen van Rijen, he combines exceptional artistry with deep musical versatility. Currently Professor of Trombone at the University of Music Saar and associate principal trombonist of the German Radio Philharmonic, Kusnierek is widely recognized as one of the leading trombonists of his generation.

Christopher Park is an internationally acclaimed pianist celebrated for his exceptional technical command, artistic maturity, and intensely expressive performances, qualities recognized through distinctions such as the Leonard Bernstein Award. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Spain, the Seoul Philharmonic, and major German radio orchestras, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach and Paavo Järvi. As an ECHO “Rising Star,” he performed the first piano recital at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie and has since appeared in many of Europe’s foremost concert halls. Influenced by both the Russian and German piano traditions, Park is also an active chamber musician and has served as Professor of Piano at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo since 2021.
