On the occasion of his 60th birthday, French hornist Hervé Joulain presents a collection of contemporary works, many of them appearing in premiere recordings and several personally dedicated to him by their composers. The project reflects Joulain’s deep commitment to modern music and his close collaboration with living composers. Emphasizing the importance of artistic dialogue, the recording highlights how performers can inspire new creations while expanding the technical and expressive possibilities of their instrument. Through adventurous and innovative interpretations, Joulain exemplifies what it means to be a truly contemporary musician, actively shaping and promoting the evolving repertoire of the French horn.

Hervé Joulain (born 1966) is a distinguished French horn player recognized internationally for his virtuosity, orchestral leadership, and commitment to chamber music and contemporary repertoire. Born in 1966 in Saint-Romans-lès-Melle, France, he became principal horn of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France at the age of twenty under Marek Janowski and later held the same position with the Orchestre National de France. Throughout his career, he has performed under renowned conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, and Lorin Maazel. Joulain is also celebrated as a chamber musician, recording artist, and educator who has given masterclasses across Europe and beyond.
