On Art of Transcription, flutist Alexander Lipay reimagines beloved chamber works by Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, and César Franck through the distinctive voice of the flute. By adapting works originally written for string instruments, Lipay reveals new colors, textures, and expressive possibilities within these familiar masterpieces. Joined by acclaimed pianist Fanya Lin, praised by Musical America as a “striking interpreter,” he brings fresh insight and vitality to Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Schubert’s Sonatina No. 2 in A Minor, and Franck’s Sonata in A Major. The result is a compelling exploration of transcription as both artistic renewal and creative discovery.
Alexander Lipay is a multifaceted musician, producer, engineer, visual artist, and athlete whose career spans a remarkable range of disciplines. He serves as Principal Flutist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and True Concord Voices & Orchestra, holding degrees in flute and piano performance from the University of Southern California and University of California, Santa Barbara. Beyond performance, Lipay has earned multiple GRAMMY®, Latin GRAMMY®, and EMMY® Awards for his work as a producer and recording engineer. He is also an acclaimed visual artist known for large-scale fantasy landscapes, receiving recognition in international competitions and being named Artist of the Month by Gallery Ring in 2021. In addition, Lipay achieved a Guinness World Records title in 2016 for the most standing ab-wheel rolls completed in one minute.
Praised by Musical America and The New York Times as a “striking interpreter” whose performances are both committed and heartfelt, Fanya Lin has established an international reputation for her dynamic artistry and expressive musicianship. A Steinway Artist, she has appeared as a soloist with ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Toruń Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfônica do Rio Grande do Norte, New Art Symphony, Hiroshima Tafel Orchestra, and Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Her concerto album RHAPSODIC, featuring works by George Gershwin and Sergei Rachmaninoff with Theodore Kuchar and the Lublin Philharmonic, earned recognition as one of Textura’s “Top 20 Classical Picks” and received second prize in the Petrichor Records Best Album Awards in 2024.
