Jukka-Pekka Saraste returns to the symphonies of Jean Sibelius with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, revisiting works that have been central to his artistic identity for more than three decades. Having first recorded the complete Sibelius symphony cycle 35 years earlier, Saraste’s renewed engagement reflects both accumulated experience and a deep connection to Finnish performance tradition. His interpretative approach draws on historical insights passed down through figures such as Jussi Jalas, including performance guidance and tempo indications associated with Sibelius himself. Emphasizing structural continuity and motivic development, Saraste focuses on the symphonies’ underlying sense of organic unity, from small thematic cells to large-scale symphonic architecture, highlighting their “compulsive drive” and cohesive design as central to his reading of the works.
Jukka-Pekka Saraste (born 1956) is an internationally acclaimed conductor known for his artistic integrity, depth of interpretation, and strong affinity for late Romantic repertoire. Born in Heinola, Finland, he began his career as a violinist before studying conducting at the Sibelius Academy under Jorma Panula. Since September 2023, he has served as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, leading major projects such as the audiovisual Sibelius & Saraste symphony cycle. His career includes leadership roles with orchestras such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, as well as guest appearances with many of the world’s leading ensembles. Renowned for his interpretations of composers including Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Jean Sibelius, Saraste also maintains an active operatic profile and supports emerging talent through initiatives such as the LEAD! Foundation and the Fiskars Summer Festival.
