IBS Classical has released Tonadas, a new album by pianist Pablo Martínez dedicated to Joaquín Nin-Culmell’s underappreciated collection of 48 Tonadas. A student of Manuel de Falla, Nin-Culmell crafts miniature concert pieces that creatively transform Spanish folk music into highly concentrated, refined artistic statements spanning the country's diverse musical geography. Inspired by a personal encounter with the music in 2020, Martínez uses these works to bridge his own roots as an expatriate in the United States. Combining poetic sensitivity with stylistic insight, Martínez’s performance firmly establishes him as a champion of this vital yet overlooked 20th-century Spanish piano repertoire.
Joaquín Nin-Culmell (1908–2004) was an eminent Cuban-Spanish composer, concert pianist, and educator whose life spanned across Germany, France, and the United States. The son of prominent musicians and the younger brother of author Anaïs Nin, he trained in Paris at the Schola Cantorum and the Paris Conservatoire under Paul Dukas, while also studying composition with Manuel de Falla. After relocating to America, Nin-Culmell enjoyed an illustrious academic career, teaching at Williams College—where Stephen Sondheim was among his students—before spending decades as a professor and conductor at UC Berkeley. His refined compositional output frequently drew inspiration from Spanish, Cuban, and religious themes, leaving an enduring mark on 20th-century music.
Spanish pianist Pablo Martínez is a celebrated artist whose international career spans prominent venues across Spain and the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Madrid’s National Auditorium. A prizewinner of numerous global competitions, Martínez is deeply committed to championing his heritage. His 2026 debut album, Tonadas (IBS Classical), features the complete cycle of Joaquín Nin-Culmell's traditional Spanish song settings and earned critical acclaim from Melómano magazine. Currently based in Houston, Texas, Martínez holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Houston, leads his own piano studio, and continues to tour as a prominent ambassador of Spanish piano repertoire.
