IBS Classical has released an ambitious double album dedicated to Tomás Bretón (1850–1923), repositioning the composer beyond his traditional association with zarzuela. Volume One features a curated selection of art songs for voice and piano, including his Six Poems by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, which blend European Lied traditions with Spanish poetry. Volume Two explores his chamber music through the expansive Piano Trio in E major and his later Quatre morceaux espagnols. Performed by a distinguished ensemble at Granada’s Manuel de Falla Auditorium, this release showcases Bretón’s profound engagement with the broader European tradition and his vital role in renewing modern Spanish musical identity.

Born into a humble Salamanca family in 1850, Tomás Bretón (1850–1923) overcame childhood poverty through early musical training in solfège, piano, and violin. To support his family and fund his education, he performed extensively in churches, cafés, and local theater orchestras. After moving to Madrid in 1865, Bretón enrolled at the Royal Conservatory under Emilio Arrieta, graduating with the prestigious End-of-Studies Prize in 1872. Following early uncatalogued symphonic attempts, Spain's burgeoning interest in Beethoven inspired Bretón to pursue the genre seriously, laying the groundwork for his pivotal role in developing modern Spanish symphonic music.
