This release commemorates the 50th anniversary of the tragic passing of David Munrow, an innovative researcher who revolutionized the field of early music during his brief but meteoric career. Munrow fundamentally transformed modern perceptions of Medieval and Renaissance music by reviving forgotten scores, reintroducing historical instruments, and democratizing the genre through popular radio programs. He also composed notable soundtracks, including the score for Joël Santoni’s 1974 documentary La Course en tête, which profiles cycling legend Eddy Merckx. Munrow’s eclectic fusion of historical pieces and original compositions lends a heroic, timeless dimension to the film, reflecting his enduring musical legacy.
David Munrow (1942–1976) was an influential British musician, early music historian, and broadcaster who significantly popularized Medieval and Renaissance music during a prolific ten-year career. A master of historical woodwinds, particularly the recorder, Munrow co-founded the Early Music Consort of London in 1967 and released over fifty records, transforming modern engagement with forgotten scores and period instruments. His work expanded into television and film, notably composing the authentic soundtrack for The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Joël Santoni's La Course en tête. Tragically, Munrow took his own life at age 33; his enduring cultural legacy was later honored when one of his recordings was included on NASA's Voyager Golden Record.
