This album comprises four wind and piano sonatas from English composer York Bowen’s middle period, a creative era characterized by strong late-Romantic and Impressionistic influences. Reflecting the aesthetics of Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky, Bowen’s individual style balances expressive contrasts and long melodic phrases with virtuosic instrumental writing. Unlike his solo piano works, the piano and wind parts in these sonatas act as equal partners, shaping rich textures, frequent modulations, and bold harmonic progressions. Imbued with mature Romanticism, these structurally sound and long-overlooked masterpieces finally receive their due, offering immense artistic satisfaction to both listeners and performers.

Celebrated by Saint-Saëns as a remarkable talent, London-born musician York Bowen (1884–1961) was a prolific composer and virtuoso pianist whose career spanned sixty years. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, where he subsequently taught for fifty years, Bowen achieved immense acclaim for his technical excellence and creative output. Often dubbed "the English Rachmaninov" due to his strikingly idiomatic and late-Romantic piano writing, he composed over 160 works, including four symphonies and numerous concertos. A multi-instrumentalist, Bowen significantly expanded the chamber music repertoire, writing distinct sonatas for an array of wind, string, and brass instruments.
