The naïve label’s Vivaldi Edition has concluded its definitive recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s 39 bassoon concertos with Volume 6, featuring bassoonist Sergio Azzolini and L’Onda Armonica. This final installment presents the remaining four complete concertos (RV 501, 478, 487, and 466) and two incomplete works (RV 468 and 482). To complete the album, Azzolini ingeniously adapts movements from Vivaldi's cello concertos (RV 399, 406, and 402), highlighting the natural affinity between the two lower-register instruments. Utilizing a lavishly expanded orchestra to emulate the Dresden Chapel tradition, this release celebrates a unique corpus that revolutionized the eighteenth-century bassoon repertoire.

Born in Bolzano, Italy, in 1967, Sergio Azzolini is a world-renowned bassoonist, director, and educator. After studying with Romano Santi and Klaus Thunemann, he won prestigious international competitions, including the ARD Munich, and performed with the Ma’alot Quintett. Exceptionally versatile, Azzolini excels in both modern and period performance practices, collaborating with prominent early music ensembles and leading his own group, L’Onda Armonica. His diverse career includes a tenure as Artistic Director of the Kammerakademie Potsdam and a multi-award-nominated recording project of Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos. Since 1998, he has served as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel.
