Crossing Grieg is an artistically bold new album from brothers Nils Henrik Asheim (piano) and Håkon Asheim (Hardanger fiddle) that offers an inventive reimagining of Edvard Grieg's repertoire. The recording blends tradition with contemporary experimentation by intertwining Grieg's original adaptations with authentic folk dances through juxtaposition and complete recomposition. Leveraging a lifetime of shared musical dialogue, Nils Henrik—a renowned contemporary composer and organist—and Håkon—a distinguished folk musician—achieve an exceptional level of intimate, intuitive collaboration. The result is a profoundly personal exploration of Norwegian musical identity that balances the familiar with the unexpected.

Born in Oslo in 1960, Nils Henrik Asheim is a distinguished Norwegian composer, organist, and curator trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music under Harald Herresthal, Geir Henning Braaten, and Olav Anton Thommessen. Known for integrating improvisation into his work, his versatile output encompasses orchestral compositions, chamber music, organ works, electronic soundscapes, and site-specific projects. Since 2013, he has served as the resident organist at Stavanger Concert Hall. Winner of the 2018 Nordic Council Music Prize for Muohta – Language of Snow, Asheim is also a two-time Spellemannspris recipient whose acclaimed discography includes major releases on LAWO Classics.

Born in Oslo in 1962, Håkon Asheim is a leading Norwegian folk musician and Hardanger fiddle specialist. After graduating from Oslo University in 1995 with a master's degree focused on the instrument's concert tradition, he worked as a freelance performer and music archivist. Since 2003, he has served as an associate professor and study coordinator at the Ole Bull Academy in Voss. Asheim's contributions to Norwegian musical heritage include his solo album Ulrik, key archival transcriptions, co-authoring a book on Ole Bull, and recording premiere works such as Ketil Hvoslef's "Hardingtrio" for LAWO Classics.
