While Zygmunt Noskowski is widely remembered as an influential teacher to later luminaries like Karol Szymanowski and Mieczysław Karłowicz, as well as for his connection to Stanisław Moniuszko, he was a pivotal figure in his own right. Throughout much of the 19th century, Noskowski stood as Poland’s leading exponent of modern music, producing works that remain central to the nation's symphonic tradition. Following Capriccio’s acclaimed recordings of his symphonies, this new album presents a program of his string quartets. The featured chamber works serve as a vibrant, evocative picture book of Polish Romanticism, reaffirming his compositional legacy.
Established in 2007, the Meccore String Quartet is recognized as one of Europe’s most compelling ensembles, celebrated for breaking musical stereotypes. Trained by the Artemis and Alban Berg Quartets, they have performed globally at landmark venues like London's Wigmore Hall and Vienna's Musikverein, and made history as the first Polish string quartet to perform at the German Bundestag for Holocaust Remembrance Day. The quartet boasts an impressive competition record, including top prizes in Sondershausen, Weiden, and London. Their highly acclaimed discography features award-winning releases of Grieg and Tchaikovsky, alongside their 2023 Krzysztof Penderecki album, which secured a Diapason d'Or and an ICMA nomination. In addition to extensive international broadcast appearances and founding the "Quarto Mondi" festival, the quartet members remain dedicated educators at Poland's leading music academies.
