Nelson Freire (1944–2021) was an acclaimed Brazilian classical pianist recognized for his poetic interpretative skill and exceptional technique. A child prodigy, he studied under pupils of Franz Liszt and Bruno Seidlhofer before earning prestigious international prizes, including the Vianna da Motta Competition. Over a six-decade career, Freire performed with world-class orchestras and formed a celebrated musical partnership with pianist Martha Argerich. Featured in Philips' Great Pianists of the 20th Century, he built an extensive Decca discography featuring works by Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Bach. His artistic contributions earned him international acclaim, including France's prestigious Légion d'Honneur.
