This fresh interpretation of Claudio Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers revives the masterpiece through rigorous musicological research and authentic Mantuan liturgy. Recorded in the Palatine Basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua, the composer's historical setting, the performance uses period-accurate instrumentation and local plainchant sources. Embracing Monteverdi’s vision of a refined chamber aesthetic designed for intimate spaces (ad Sacella sive Principum Cubicula accomodata), this recording eschews grand monumental display. By grounding the work in its original architectural, spiritual, and acoustic context, the ensemble creates an exceptionally direct and emotionally powerful listening experience that highlights the subtle warmth and vocal closeness of the score.

Taking its name from the Italian and French phrase evoking both physical height and adventurous exploration, the early music ensemble InAlto centers its repertoire on the dialogue between vocal and instrumental music of the 16th and 17th centuries. The group prominently features the cornetto, a historic wooden instrument celebrated for its voice-like agility and brilliant upper register.
