This album explores the extraordinary life of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689), an unconventional 17th-century monarch who abdicated her throne at age 28 and relocated from Stockholm to Rome. As an influential arts patron in Rome, Christina helped transform the city into a thriving cultural epicenter while championing celebrated Baroque masters such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli. Performed by Denmark’s acclaimed early music ensemble, Concerto Copenhagen, the recording traces her historical journey through Swedish court music and Italian masterpieces. Blending historical scholarship with vibrant musicianship, the ensemble honors a visionary ruler who defied societal norms to leave a lasting impact on European culture.

Founded in 1991, the Danish National Baroque Orchestra Concerto Copenhagen (CoCo) has established itself as Scandinavia's premier early music ensemble. The orchestra's distinct artistic focus pairs masterworks from the European Baroque and Classical traditions with lesser-known Scandinavian compositions, alongside contemporary projects such as Karl Aage Rasmussen's residency from 2015 to 2017. CoCo regularly collaborates with world-renowned vocalists and instrumentalists, including Emma Kirkby, Andreas Scholl, Anne Sofie von Otter, and Jordi Savall. Having toured globally across North and South America, Asia, and Australia, the ensemble maintains an extensive discography across major labels like Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Decca, BIS, and CPO.
