“It can be asserted without hesitation that every member of a first-class orchestra deserves to be called an ‘artist’,” Arthur Nikisch once wrote. With this credo, the chief conductor of what at that time was called the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester played an important role in allowing the musicians to conceive of themselves as soloists — something that remains one of the unmistakable qualities of the Berliner Philharmoniker to this day.
This series aims to introduce the soloists of the Berliner Philharmoniker in selected recordings. The spotlight here is on Marie-Pierre Langlamet, the orchestra’s harpist since 1993. She was only 17 when she was appointed to her first position, in the Orchestre philharmonique de Nice. Four years later, she moved to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and from there she came to the Berliner Philharmoniker. Marie-Pierre Langlamet is also in demand as a teacher and performs all over the world both in solo recitals and with renowned chamber ensembles and orchestras.
