December 24th will mark the bicentenary of composer Peter Cornelius (24 December 1824 – 26 October 1874). Born on Christmas Eve, he remains famous mostly for his Christmas works: the Weihnachtslieder cycle of songs and the very popular German carol Die drei Könige. Very close to Liszt and Wagner, Cornelius was also a refined composer of stage works, his most famous being The Barber of Bagdad, a ravishing comic opera in which Abul plays - as his Sevillian alter ego - the matchmaker between Nureddin and Margiana, the daughter of a Muslim dignitary. This digital premiere highlights a great cast of singers with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Nicolai Gedda, Hermann Prey or Oskar Czerwenka in the title role.

Erich Leinsdorf (February 4, 1912 – September 11, 1993) was an Austrian-born American conductor. Born in Vienna, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the University of Vienna and the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1937 he moved to the United States, where he gained prominence as a conductor with several major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with which he had a long tenure as music director from 1962 to 1969. Leinsdorf was known for his authoritative interpretations of works by composers like Beethoven, Wagner and Strauss, as well as for his versatility in both opera and symphonic music.
