December 27th will mark a hundred years since the passing of Russian painter and designer Léon Bakst (1866–1924). A pivotal figure of cultural Europe during the early 20th-century, his name is inseparable from his friend the impresario Diaghilev, with whom he collaborated in the innovative scenography of the Ballets russes, triumphing on the stages worldwide. Bakst left a considerable collection of drawings and sketches of sets and costumes, revealing his amazing creativity. A Life for the Stage highlights many of the musical works Bakst has contributed, from the iconic ballets Daphnis et Chloé and Firebird premiered in Paris with sublime sceneries, to operas such as Sadko and Mignon.
