The Quintet is one of Caplet’s earliest works. It was composed during his years of study at the Paris Conservatory, in 1898 and 1899. The first movement was publicly premiered on April 19, 1899, by members of the Société moderne d'instruments à vent, including Georges Barrère on flute and Caplet on piano. The full work was premiered on March 30, 1900, the year it won the prize from the Société des compositeurs de musique. After several performances, the score disappeared, only to be rediscovered in the late 1930s and published at the end of the 1990s. In this piece, André Caplet demonstrates 'a refined nature, already concerned with freeing himself from the strict observance of the disciplines of the school, and subordinating technical mastery—already surprisingly solid—to a poetic purpose.'
