The musical language of Bernd Stegmann (b. 1952) moves through seemingly very different stylistic realms: elements of old a cappella tradition stand alongside hammered recitative passages, big band effects next to segments of minimal music, medieval-sounding drone fifths next to lush Latin jazz harmonies. A unifying sense of motion ties these heterogeneous components together.
