Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989) was an influential Austrian conductor born in Salzburg. Initially trained as a pianist, he was guided toward conducting and studied in Vienna before beginning his career in German opera houses. He gained prominence in Aachen and later at the Berlin State Opera. After World War II, Karajan established an international reputation through recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic and leadership of the Philharmonia Orchestra. He succeeded Wilhelm Furtwängler as director of the Berlin Philharmonic and served as artistic director of the Vienna State Opera. Renowned for prolific recordings and technological innovation, Karajan became a defining figure in mainstream classical music.
