Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) was a prominent Russian composer and member of The Five, known for his mastery of orchestration and his nationalistic musical style. His most famous works, including Scheherazade, Capriccio Espagnol, and the Russian Easter Festival Overture, draw on Russian folklore and fairy tales. A pioneer of musical orientalism, he blended Russian folk traditions with exotic elements. As a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, he embraced Western techniques and became a leading educator. Rimsky-Korsakov greatly influenced Russian music, shaping future composers and bringing works by The Five into the repertoire, with lasting impact beyond Russia.
Founded in 1945, the Philharmonia Orchestra is a world-renowned ensemble based at London’s Southbank Centre, with additional UK residencies. Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali and Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop lead the 80-member orchestra, following in the footsteps of legends like Karajan and Salonen. Known for premiering works by major composers and collaborating with top soloists, the Philharmonia also embraces innovation through partnerships with artists like Nemanja Radulović and Vidya Patel. Deeply involved in community outreach, it runs programs for schools, carers, and underserved groups. The Orchestra tours widely, with 2024/25 performances scheduled across Europe and Japan.
