Kirnberger’s eight surviving symphonies, recorded here complete for the first time, most likely originate from his period as harpsichordist in Prince Heinrich’s ensemble. Conceived primarily for a four-part string ensemble, the works allow for the addition of brass and woodwind instruments when required, a flexible scoring practice also employed by C. P. E. Bach.

Johann Philipp Kirnberger (1721–1783) was a German composer, violinist, and influential music theorist, best known for his fugues and theoretical writings. A pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach from 1739 to 1741, Kirnberger remained a devoted advocate of Bach’s music throughout his life, preserving important manuscripts and promoting the publication of Bach’s chorale works. After working in Poland and engaging deeply with Polish dance traditions, he joined the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin and later served as music director to Princess Anna Amalia. His legacy rests chiefly on Die Kunst des reinen Satzes and on tuning systems bearing his name.

Reinhard Goebel (b. 1952) is a seminal figure in early music and an influential conductor of modern orchestras. As founder of Musica Antiqua Köln, he redefined historical performance practice for more than three decades, setting new standards of precision, vitality, and stylistic insight through landmark recordings and performances. Renowned for his meticulous approach to articulation and ensemble sound, Goebel later transferred these principles to modern chamber and symphony orchestras, offering fresh perspectives on Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic repertoire. A committed educator and intellectual, he has held leading academic posts and, since 2021, has served as artistic director of the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum Leipzig.
