Paul Hindemith (1895–1963) was a key figure in 20th-century German music, known for his eclectic style that fused expressionism, neo-classicism, and jazz. His compositions are rhythmically vibrant, energetic, and emotionally wide-ranging. Der Schwanendreher, a viola concerto composed in 1935, reflects Hindemith’s blend of modernity and tradition. Drawing on old German folk songs, the work combines lyrical melodies with inventive orchestration. As a violist, Hindemith premiered the piece himself with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Willem Mengelberg. The concerto stands out for its charm, expressive depth, and its seamless integration of historical and contemporary musical elements.

Luca Ranieri is a distinguished Italian violist who graduated with honors from the “G. Verdi” Conservatory in Milan and studied further with Bruno Giuranna at the Accademia W. Stauffer in Cremona. Formerly a member of the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, he became principal viola of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in 1999. Ranieri has performed under top conductors including Muti, Barenboim, Chailly, and Gergiev, and has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras in Italy and abroad. Known for acclaimed performances of works by Bartók, Hindemith, and Berlioz, he also collaborates in chamber music with renowned artists and directs the Garda Lake Music Academy.
