Composed for Rostropovich at the great cellist’s request, the cello concerto by Arthur Bliss is a late work, dating from 1970. It was premiered at that year’s Aldeburgh Festival, performed by its dedicatee with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Britten. The composer called it a ‘concertino’, but Britten declared it a ‘major piece’ and begged Bliss to alter the title to concerto which he agreed to do. It is a demanding work for the soloist, and, as the composer commented ‘there are no problems for the listener – only the soloist!’
Guy Johnston (b. 1981) is a leading British cellist known for his expressive performances and commitment to both classical and contemporary repertoire. Early achievements include winning BBC Young Musician of the Year and multiple major awards. He has performed with top orchestras worldwide, such as the London Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, and BBC Symphony, and recently earned acclaim as soloist in Taverner’s The Protecting Veil with Britten Sinfonia. A dedicated chamber musician, he is Artistic Director of the Hatfield House Music Festival and collaborates with many renowned artists. Johnston is also a prolific recording artist, championing new British works and historical instruments.
