Adalbert Gyrowetz, born in 1763, precisely between Mozart and Beethoven, was one of those who experienced the changing times in particularly drastic fashion. When he died in 1850, Schumann was 40 and Liszt 39; and Chopin—who had made his debut in Warsaw in 1818 with a piano concerto by the Bohemian—had already been dead for half a year. Gyrowetz had once been celebrated especially for his instrumental music, which was widely published, performed—and eventually forgotten. The composer later turned to writing for the stage, composed church music, and created a kind of late period for himself, in which he likely looked back wistfully on his earlier works—some of which were once mistaken for Haydn’s best. How this could happen is demonstrated by the selection from the "good old days" compiled by tireless rediscoverer Howard Griffiths. The choice of orchestra is no coincidence: Gyrowetz was once held in high esteem along the Thames as well. Now, he is back.
