During the first COVID-19 lockdown, violinist Julia Fischer, violist Nils Mönkemeyer, and the Oliver Schnyder Trio united to record Shostakovich’s piano quintet and two piano trios. This exceptional collaboration, now released as a deluxe digibook marking the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, delivers a deeply moving and masterfully performed interpretation. The recording captures the emotional intensity and inner conflict that define Shostakovich’s music—composed under the pressure of expressing personal truth while navigating enforced loyalty to a repressive regime. It stands as both a high-level chamber music achievement and a poignant tribute to the composer’s enduring legacy.
The Oliver Schnyder Trio (OST) marked its 10th anniversary in 2022/23, having debuted at Zurich’s Tonhalle and quickly gaining acclaim with benchmark recordings of Schubert and Brahms piano trios. Known for their expressive interpretations and award-winning albums, including WinterreiseN with tenor Daniel Behle and a complete Beethoven trio cycle, OST’s releases have earned international praise and multiple honors. The trio has performed at major venues and festivals across Europe and Asia, often collaborating with prominent artists such as Julia Fischer and Nils Mönkemeyer. Recent projects include Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, further cementing OST’s status as a leading chamber ensemble.
